As the cold weather rolls in and snow starts to blanket the ground, it's important to make sure our furry friends are just as prepared for the winter months as we are! With shorter days, icy sidewalks, and freezing temperatures, winter can pose unique challenges for dogs. Whether you're planning snowy hikes or cozying up at home, here are a few helpful cold weather care tips, to ensure your dog stays safe, warm, and happy this winter.

Tip 1: Keep Your Dog Warm with Proper Winter Gear

Not all dogs are built for cold weather, so making sure your pup has the right gear is essential. For short-haired or small dogs, consider investing in a warm, well-fitted winter coat. Dog boots are also a great idea, not just for keeping their paws warm but also to protect them from ice, salt, and harmful chemicals often used on sidewalks. If your pup isn't used to wearing boots, take some time to get them comfortable by trying them out inside the house before venturing outside.

Tip 2: Adjust Their Exercise Routine

When winter hits, outdoor playtime might need some adjustments. If the weather is especially cold or icy, shorter but more frequent walks may be a better option to keep your dog active without exposing them to the elements for too long. On days when it's too cold to be outside, make up for it with indoor games and mental stimulation. Try incorporating puzzle toys, treat-dispensing toys, or even a homemade obstacle course to keep your dog entertained and moving inside.

Tip 3: Protect Those Paws

Your dog’s paws are especially vulnerable during the winter. Ice, snow, and road salt can cause irritation, cracking, and discomfort. After each walk, make sure to clean and dry their paws thoroughly. Applying a paw balm or moisturizer can help soothe and protect their sensitive pads from cracking due to the dry air or cold surfaces.

If your dog isn’t a fan of boots, using a paw balm before walks is a great alternative for creating a protective barrier against ice and salt.

Tip 4: Watch for Signs of Frostbite and Hypothermia

It’s important to keep an eye on your dog when they’re outside in the cold. Frostbite can occur on areas like their ears, paws, and tail if they are exposed to freezing temperatures for too long. If you notice your dog shivering, slowing down, or looking uncomfortable, it’s time to bring them inside and warm them up. Keep an eye out for signs of hypothermia, such as weakness, pale gums, and lethargy, and if you suspect it, contact your vet right away.

Tip 5: Hydrate Even in Cold Weather

It’s easy to forget about hydration in the winter, but dogs need plenty of fresh water, even in cold weather. Dry winter air can dehydrate dogs just as much as the heat of summer. Make sure their water bowl doesn’t freeze if it’s kept outside, and encourage them to drink regularly throughout the day, especially after playing in the snow.

Tip 6: Create a Warm Indoor Space

Lastly, make sure your dog has a cozy spot to relax inside. Whether it’s a plush dog bed, a heated mat, or a crate lined with soft blankets, giving your pup a warm place to retreat to is important, especially for senior dogs or those with arthritis. If your dog tends to get chilly at night, a cozy sweater or heated dog blanket can provide them with extra comfort.

Tip 7: Plan for Holiday Travel with Your Pup

If you’re traveling for the holidays, make sure you plan ahead for your dog’s needs. Bring along all of their winter essentials, including coats, booties, and extra blankets. If you’re staying in a pet-friendly hotel or AirBnB, check their policies regarding pets during colder weather, and pack everything your dog needs to stay warm and comfortable during the trip.

Winter can be a fun season for you and your dog with the right care and preparation! Whether you’re hitting the snowy trails or curling up indoors, keeping your dog warm, safe, and active will ensure they enjoy the season just as much as you do.
